Topics:

A Passion for Revival:Lessons from the Life of Sarah Edwards

In 1742 during a revival at Northampton, Sarah Edwards, the wife of the great preacher Jonathan Edwards, experienced the love and grace of God in an extraordinary and profound way. She wrote, “I was entirely swallowed up in God, as my only portion, and his honour and glory was the object of my supreme desire and delight.” Her experience of the reality of the love of God released her from fearing the opinions of others, liberated her from judging others, empowered her with a genuine love toward everyone she knew (including those who opposed her husband’s ministry) and equipped her to face the most appalling suffering without giving way to bitterness or fear. Sarah’s life and testimony should encourage us to face trials with serenity. It should also inspire us to pray with greater fervor for God to work in revival once more.

A Passion for Mission:Lessons from the Life of Ann Judson

Adoniram Judson and his wife Ann were among the first group of American missionaries to go overseas. Ann served with her husband in Burma from 1813 until her death in 1826 at the early age of 37. We will look at Ann’s life and testimony, and learn from her consecration to Christ, her confidence in the sovereignty of God, her determination to be faithful to Scripture whatever the cost, her submission to the will of God in times of suffering and her willingness to persevere in the work of the Gospel through times of seemingly little success. She always placed her own comfort and happiness in second place to the work of the Kingdom. Her example encourages us to greater zeal in praying for and supporting mission work today.

A Passion for Holiness:Lessons from the Life of Frances Ridley Havergal

Frances Ridley Havergal was born in 1836 in a tiny hamlet in the depths of the Worcestershire countryside in England. She was to become one of the best-known Christian writers of the nineteenth century. Her hymn, “Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee,” sums up the passion of her life. She chose to serve as a single woman, and throughout her short life (she died at the age of 42), she was engaged in a range of extraordinarily productive ministries. Looking at her life will challenge us to ask the questions: Are all my words consecrated to the Lord Jesus? Do I spend time with Him each day? Do I seek to obey God’s solemn command: “Be holy, as I am holy”?

“What Did You Expect?” this Friday

Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, MD is hosting pastor and author Paul Tripp on this Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, 2012 for a conference on marriage entitled “What Did You Expect? Redeeming the Realities of Marriage.” Dr. Tripp will discuss the beauty of marriage as a reflection of God’s glory as well as the realities of life that threaten to destroy it. The conference is based on Dr. Tripp’s book of the same title. Singles are also encouraged to attend.

Registration is $7.50 per person. The conference starts at 6:30pm on Friday and concludes at 12:30pm on Saturday.

Conference Overview

A marriage of unity, understanding and love is not rooted in romance but in worship. It is only worship of God as Creator, Sovereign, and Savior that will lead us to love as we should. Have you ever wondered why some couples reach a place of unity, love, and understanding in their marriages while other couples seem trapped in the same struggles year, after year, after year? The surrounding culture would lead us to believe that a marriage of unity, love, and understanding is rooted in romance. Scripture would rather say that a good marriage is the result of worship.

Does this confuse you? Then this marriage conference is for you. Learn how practical these insights are for the everyday issues and situations of a real marriage; and, learn the practical steps that will help couples know how to get from where they are, to where God wants them to be.
